How to Find an Adequate Car Insurance Policy

Kentucky residents will need car insurance to drive their vehicle legally. However, there are many different types of auto insurance to choose from, and the types that drivers may need depends largely on his or her unique circumstances. Those who have just purchased a new car may want to get comprehensive coverage that protects against damage caused by a natural disaster or a theft.

It is typically purchased along with collision insurance, which will provide money to pay for or replace a vehicle after an accident. A collision insurance policy may pay for damages if a car collides with a house or another object or is damaged because the vehicle flipped over. If a driver has a personal injury protection policy, he or she may be compensated for medical expenses after an accident regardless of fault.

If a car is totaled, a driver is only entitled to the market value of the car when the accident occurs. However, he or she may still owe a lender more than the car is worth. With a guaranteed auto protection policy, a driver may be able to collect the difference between the car’s market value and what he or she owes on the car.

Even if an individual has auto insurance, it may still not be enough to pay for medical expenses or other costs incurred after a car wreck. When the accident is the result of another motorist who was speeding, distracted, impaired by alcohol or drugs, or otherwise negligent, people who have been injured and whose coverage is inadequate may want to bring a lawsuit against the responsible driver.
