Steps to take when in an accident with an uninsured driver

All drivers in Kentucky need to have auto insurance. This holds true for most states, and yet, information gathered by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners found that nearly 13 percent of drivers do not have any insurance.

It is dangerous to drive without insurance. However, perhaps you have a policy in place. You may end up in an accident thinking you will be all right only to discover the other driver lacks coverage. The other driver may want to work out a deal that does not involve the authorities, but you need to think about your own best interest. Here are the steps to take to try to receive damages.

Contact the police

You should get the police to come out to the scene to any car accident no matter what, but it becomes even more critical when dealing with an uninsured motorist. An official police report will go a long way in the claims process.

Exchange information

Ordinarily, you would exchange insurance information with the other driver. However, when one party lacks insurance, you still want to acquire his or her contact information. Write down a phone number, email address and driver's license number.

See a medical professional

You may have sustained injuries during the crash or perhaps you feel fine. Either way, you want to get a physical examination to ensure you did not take on any outstanding injuries. Some medical problems that usually accompany a car crash do not appear for weeks.

Contact insurance provider

After you see a doctor, you want to contact your insurance provider to begin the claims process. If you have uninsured driver protection, then it will be much simpler. If you do not currently have this policy in place, then it is worth acquiring. When you do not, your agent will still be able to assist you with the next steps. That may involve getting a lawyer on-board to sue the other driver for damages.
